So Yeon Ryu leads by one shot heading into final round at
Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters
(December 7, 2013; New Taipei City) On a day when just about everyone including world no. 1 & overnight leader Inbee Park are dropping shots, 2011 U.S. Women's Open winner So Yeon Ryu of South Korea and teen phenom Lydia Ko of New Zealand are two of only a handful of players who are gaining ground. Ryu jumps to the top of the leaderboard in strong winds with a 5-under 67 for a total score of 135, 1 stroke ahead of Ko, who carded 68.
Inbee Park, who looked almost unstoppable while setting a personal low-round record of 63 yesterday, lost her magical touch and tumbled to 76 and third place. Japan’s Rara Anai finished with 71 to come in at fourth place. With swirling winds gusting up to 40 km/h, Miramar G&C, which looked toothless in round one suddenly got the best of most of the elite field, as only seven players in the 95-player field managed to break par.
“It was very hard to play golf in strong winds and my game today wasn’t exactly A+ or A, but my short game especially my putting on the front nine was great, and my chipping was pretty good,” said Ryu, who completed her impressive front nine in 31, has only one blemish on her score card when her short putt for par lipped out on the 15th green. “Tomorrow I will play with Lydia again, so it will be cool competing with a rock star.”
Even though the strong winds slowed things down and protracted the round, Lydia Ko still had lots of fun with her two Korean playing partners. “We had some good chats when we were waiting. I am just super excited to play with So Yeon and Na Yeon (Choi); they are the rock stars.” Ko recorded 5 birdies against one bogey when her tee shot with a hybrid club ballooned in the air and landed 30 yards short of the green on the par-3 14th hole. “I am glad I gave myself a lot of opportunities out there. Even putting was hard in the wind, but we are lucky that it did not rain today. “
World no. 7 Na Yeon Choi also struggled in the wind today, managing to shoot 2-over 74 to tie for 5th with her Korean compatriot Kyu Jung Baek. Scottish veteran Catriona Matthew, who opened with 65 in round one, had 2 double-bogeys en route to 79, which put her tied for 9th place with Koreans Sei Young Kim and So Young Lee (a).
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s ace Yani Tseng also had a long day, both literally and figuratively. Tseng pulled her tee shot out of bound on the treacherous 6th hole and hit her approach shot into water hazard on the 15th hole, both resulting in double-bogeys. 2011 winner Yani Tseng managed only 2 birdies to close at 78, tied for 18th place with 5 players including US star player “Pink Panther” Paula Creamer and Taiwan’s top amateur Ssu-Chia Cheng.
“I have trouble with distance control all day. I felt like I didn’t play well today. But I am very appreciative that fans still came out to support me. The strong wind really slowed down the pace of play and we had to wait almost on every hole. So it’s physically demanding out here and I don’t think my stamina is still where I want it to be,” said Tseng, who is 11 shots behind leader So Yeon Ryu.
Final round of the Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters, a co-sanctioned golf tournament by both Korea’s KLPGT and Taiwan’s TLPGA, will commence from 8:20am onwards at the Miramar G&C. Yani Tseng is set to tee off from the first hole with Kumiko Kaneda of Japan and Yoon Ji Cho of Korea at 9:40am. So Yeon Ryu, who has ten top 10 finishes on the LPGA tour this season, will be shooting for her first win in 2013 tomorrow. Ryu will be paired with LPGA Player of the Year Inbee Park and Lydia Ko, who is only playing in her second tournament as a professional golfer this week. The elite trio will start from the first hole at 10:50am.
