Inbee Park opens with a sizzling 63 to set personal low-round record
Takes a 2-shot lead into Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters R2
(December 6, 2013; New Taipei City) Inbee Park, the world no. 1 player, might have looked a bit sluggish in the Celebrity Charity Skins Game yesterday, but today she put her game face on and was all business. Park laced her sizzling round with 8 birdies, one eagle and a lone bogey to finish at 63 (-9), one shot better than her personal record for a 2-shot lead over Scotland’s Catriona Matthew in the first round of the Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters.
Inbee Park was hitting on all cylinders with her game today, especially her putter. “This is probably the best I have putted in the last 3 or 4 months.” Inbee’s highlight reel for R1 also included a chip-in eagle 3 from the fairway at the 12th hole. “Yeah, I was thinking about double-digit under par but then again I might have let a couple of birdies slip away,” said Park, who shot 64 twice previously in her LPGA career.
The unexpected nice weather became a hot topic today at the Miramar G&C, where the tournament suffered from cold and raining weather the past 2 years. “I thought it was going to be cold and rainy again so I brought lots of warm clothing and rain gear with me, but no short-sleeved shirts, so I got hotter and hotter as I played today.”
Yani, who closed with 3 consecutive birdies to bring the house down, also chimed in on the hot topic. “The weather was really nice today and the greens are in great condition, so many top players were able to shoot low scores. I think the efforts of Swinging Skirts are paying off, and I think the tournament deserves better weather.”
Yani couldn’t get much going on the front nine, but she told herself to be patient and aggressive after making the turn. “I had a little bet going on with my caddie: if I made 1 birdie, he wins; 2 birdies, it’s a tie; 3 birdies or more I win.” The extra wager motivated Yani as she reeled off 3 straight birdies on the last 3 holes, including a sensational sand wedge shot from the greenside bunker that saw the ball rolled into the hole on the 17th hole. Yani said she was well rested after a 1 and a half months break from golf after her hernia surgery.
Matthew shot a bogey-free round as she collected 7 birdies, however, only to find herself trailing by 2 shots. “I played well today. It will be nice to end the season with a win to keep me fired up for 2014.
Defending champion Na Yeon Choi of South Korea and in-form German Sandra Gal both shot 67 today. Yani Tseng was another shot adrift and tied for 5th place with world no. 5 So Yeon Ryu of South Korea and teen sensation Lydia Ko with 68.
Lydia, who was once tied with Inbee, fizzled out in her last 5 holes with 3 bogeys and no birdies. “I am a young player and I made mistakes. I made some mistakes on the back nine. I think I will learn from them.”
Taiwan’s top amateur Ssu-Chia Cheng, who set an all-time record with two wins on Taiwan’s TLPGA tour this season, shot 2-under 70 today, tied for 11th with six players including Korean former world no. 1 Jiyai Shin. Taiwan’s Teresa Lu, who walked away with the most prize money in the Charity Skins Game, struggled all day and closed with 2-over 74, tied for 49th place.
Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters, a co-sanctioned golf tournament by Korea’s KLPGT and Taiwan’s TLPGA and organized by the Taiwan-based Swinging Skirts Golf Team, offers USD 1 million in prize money while featuring a star-studded field including Inbee Park, Lydia Ko, Na Yeon Choi, So Yeon Ryu, Yani Tseng and Paula Creamer of the US, who shot even-par 72 today and tied for 23rd.
Second-round will tee off from 8:45am onwards. Yani Tseng will start her round from the 1st hole at 10:55am with Caroline Hedwall of Sweden and Japan’s Rara Anai. Inbee Park will tee off at 11:15am with Catriona Matthew and Sandra Gal also from the 1st hole.
