2013/12/05

Taiwan’s dynamic duo triumphs at Celebrity Charity Skins Game
(December 5, 2013; New Taipei City) On a beautiful day that everyone hoped for, the outcome was everything everyone bargained for. Taiwan’s two LPGA stars Yani Tseng and Teresa Lu took full advantage of home course advantage, lovely weather and local fans’ support to come out on top at the Celebrity Charity Skins Game with earnings of USD 58,000 and USD 81,000, respectively, beating their star-studded playing partners including World no. 1 Inbee Park, no. 6 Lydia Ko and no. 7 Na Yeon Choi.
Yani made a timely birdie on the 8th hole to clean out all but the opening hole with 7 skins, in addition to sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to win lucrative holes 16 and 17, en route to winning 13 skins for a haul of USD 58,000.
“I think the birdie on no. 8 is the turning point. It is a confidence-booster. But I also got lucky because I made birdies when no one else did. ” Yani, who underwent a minor surgery in late October, said today’s skins competition was a nice practice round for her as she was able to do some tweaks on the course, including her stance and aim.
Teresa Lu, coming off her first LPGA win in the co-sanctioned Mizuno Classic in Japan last month, used a late surge to win all the skins on the highly-rewarding back 9, for a total earnings of USD81,000. “This is my first try at the skins game. I felt more confident after last month, but there are still some areas of my game that I need to work on.
Lydia Ko of New Zealand got off to a blazing start but fizzled out after 5 holes to finish with five skins worth USD8,000. Long-hitting Korean tour money winner Ha Na Jang won holes 6,7,8,and 9 to walk away with USD11,000. Jessica Korda of the US ended her drought with a precise chip at the playoff to claim the final hole worth a whopping USD20,000. Korean star He Young Park finished with USD22,000. On the other hand, Korean stars Inbee Park and Na Yeon Choi both failed to win any holes and came home empty-handed.
Half of the USD200,000 prize money on offer at the Celebrity Charity Skins Game today was subsequently donated to the Swinging Skirts Golf Foundation to benefit the development of junior golf in Taiwan. Yani Tseng said all the players had a great time and were happy that they could contribute to charity and junior golf.
In the amateur group, Taiwan’s Yu-ju Chen was sharp all day and finished on a high note with an impressive hole-out from 65 yards out for an eagle 3 on the final hole, winning 7 skins and donated all her earnings to the Swinging Skirts Golf Foundation.
54-hole stroke-play tournament of the Swinging Skirts 2013 World Ladies Masters will commence tomorrow, with 96 players teeing off from both sides from 8:30am onwards. Yani Tseng will tee off from the first hole at 10:50am with Sandra Gal of Germany and defending champion Na Yeon Choi; Meanwhile, LPGA player of the year Inbee Park will be paired with last year’s first runner-up Teresa Lu for a tee time of 10:30am at the first hole.
